Tips for Travel

June 7, 2007

Since It’s Almost Summer….

Summer is nearly here and many folks will be heading out for vacations.  So, I thought maybe some tips for traveling would be in order.  Whether you’re traveling near or far, these tips will help you relax where ever you are.  Bad poetry there, I know.  I’ll just stick to the tips.

First of all, make sure the trip is actually in your budget.  There’s no real relaxing going on when you have the debt of a vacation looming over your head.  Plan where you’re going around the money you have to spend.  Though you may dream of that 7 day cruise, realistically, you may end up with a pitched tent in your back yard!  That’s okay!  Just save for a better vacation next year.

Seriously, though, if you do have the money to go away, here’s some advice to make it run more smoothly.

  • Making a list of everything you’re bringing will ensure that you won’t forget anything and checking it again before you come home will ensure you won’t leave anything behind.
  • Lay out everything you want to bring, and then put half of it away.  People tend to over pack on vacations.  Bring articles of clothing that coordinate well with each other so you can mix and match throughout the trip.  And, pack for the climate you’ll be going to.  I once left NH in winter and arrived in Arizona with my jeans, boots and sweater on with no change of clothes in my carry on and luggage that ended up in San Diego. (see next tip!)
  • If flying, carry at least one change of clothes in your carry on bag just in case your luggage gets lost.  If you’ve seen Meet the Parents, you’ll understand the importance of that.
  • Pack some snacks like granola bars to curb your hunger when the travel time will be long.
  • Keep all of your important papers, such as your passport or license with you at all times.
  • Buy hotel sized toiletries and keep them in a plastic pouch of their own.  It’s a good idea for a couple of reasons.  One, if one of the bottles should mysteriously open, it will be contained and not spread all over your clothes.  Second, you don’t have to unpack it when you get home.  Just stash it away until the next trip.
  • Let someone at home know what your travel plans are and when you can be expected back…just in case.
  • If you’re traveling with kids, bring lots of travel games and extra batteries for electronic toys.
  • Confirm all reservations before you leave home.  There’s nothing like getting to a hotel only to realize they mistakenly booked you for the following weekend.
  •  Enjoy yourself, obviously. J
