Fall Organizing Tips

October 13, 2006

So, at last summer has come to an end and the task of preparing for the long, cold winter is upon us.  Yes, it's true.  We SHOULD have three months of autumn to prepare, but here in the Great North Woods, we know better.  There is about a month, maybe a month and a half before the first snow could visit our doorsteps.  Are you ready for it?

Here are some ideas to take advantage of the fall month(s) to prepare for winter:

  • ¨ Go through your summer clothes and keep only what you think you'll use again next year. Donate the rest. Then, store them in see-through plastic containers with labels with each family member's name on them.
  • ¨ Gather all of your fall/winter clothes, and if you didn't do so last spring, go through those and donate what you won't wear. Put what you will wear in your drawers or closet.
  • ¨ Start cleaning out your garage (maybe you can actually put your car in there this year!) Try to hang as many items on the walls as you can to save floor space.
  • ¨ Wash all of your windows inside and out. Also wash down your trash cans and recycle bins. Then wipe down your kitchen cabinets, especially the tops where you might find lots of dust.
  • ¨ Give your car some TLC by washing it, vacuuming it, and giving it necessary maintenance.
  • ¨ If you haven't done so already, start buying Christmas gifts now so you won't be so overwhelmed at Christmas time. Be sure to pay for these gifts with cash so you won't incur any debt for them.
  • ¨ Pull your shovels and snow toys out of storage so they'll be handy when you need them. Likewise, put all of your summer toys away for the winter.
  • ¨ Lastly, take time to enjoy the foliage and the cool weather.
