It's that time of year again. We set our resolutions in place and begin attacking our problem areas like there's no tomorrow. We dream big. We're revitalized. We believe we can conquer the world. Unfortunately, the reality is that some time passes and we face some setbacks that discourage us and throw us off track leaving us feeling defeated so we give up. Let's resolve to not be defeated in 2008. We will press on toward our goals, whatever they may be. First, set your goal, no matter how big it is and write it down. For the sake of this article, we'll say that the goal is to organize a home office. That's a pretty big goal and a bit vague and overwhelming. An office has many facets to it. Trying to attack it all at once will certainly curb your enthusiasm.
After you've set your goal, you'll want to break that giant goal down into something more manageable. In our example, a breakdown might include clearing off the desk, cleaning out the drawers, updating the contents of the filing cabinet, etc.
When you have listed some mini-goals, decide how much time you will give yourself to complete each one and schedule it. For example, Tuesday, take a half hour to clear the clutter off your desk. On Wednesday, spend 15 minutes cleaning out the desk drawers. When each mini-goal is done, mark it as completed. It is very important to keep a list of the goals accomplished in sight because it is motivating when you are feeling beaten.
Give yourself a reasonable reward when you have achieved a goal. You should be proud that you are accomplishing what you have set out to do. There will always be distractions and minor setbacks, but don't let yourself be discouraged. Keep your eyes on the prize and by January 2009, you'll look back on all you've accomplished with a sense of satisfaction.
