Filing Made Easy
March 10, 2008
One of the things I most often deal with in organizing is paper clutter. People have enormous amounts of paper and no organized way to put it away. So, to get a start on eliminating the countertop clutter, try these steps to make filing less painful. - Go through your files and papers now and toss out everything that is old and unnecessary. Only keep your current year's files in the cabinet.
- Decide what you will keep in your file cabinet. (Personal or business files)
- There are a few different ways to organize your files.
- Alphabetically- If you remember the name of every company you do business with, you could alphabetize them.
- By Subject - Place your files in order by subjects such as Insurance, Bills, Loans, Credit Cards, etc.
- By Month - Keep all of your monthly correspondence or bills, in one folder with a list of the contents written on the outside so things are easy to find.
- Label your files neatly.
- Stagger the files so they are easier to see.
- You should keep a tray near by that you can place "things to be filed" into, but make sure you set aside a time every week to put things away.
- Go through your mail as soon as you get it and throw out those pesky credit card offers and the like.
- Don't stress about it. Just make it so you can find what you need when you need it.
